Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has said that the Federal Government has commissioned 63 gully erosion projects across the federation.

Malami made this disclosure while commissioning the phase 1 of a gully erosion project in Nasarawa State recently.

The AGF, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the event, said the 5 kilometre project in Nasarawa showed the commitment of the Federal Government to safeguard the lives and properties of the people from environmental challenges.

“I therefore implore the communities to cherish this laudable project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels. It is the responsibility of the communities to own and maintain the project to ensure its sustainability,” he said.

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibrin, said the project was conceived in 2013 by the Nasarawa Town Development Association, which identified erosion sites and caused a letter to be forwarded to the Federal Government through the emir of the town.

He commended the contractor for the quick delivery of the project, which was awarded in April 2017.

Earlier, a representative of the Nasarawa State governor, Randolph Para, stressed the determination of the state government to ensure the management of environmental challenges through the enactment of the Environmental Degradation, Prevention and Control Law.
