The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned the newly constructed Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV turn-in-turn-out transmission lines at the Ihovbor Transmission Substation in Edo State as part of efforts to boost electricity transmission across the country.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Benin, the Managing Director of TCN, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the project would strengthen the nation’s transmission network and enhance the evacuation of bulk electricity from the Ihovbor substation to distribution load centres nationwide.

He disclosed that the project would inject an additional 600 megawatts into the national grid, thereby improving electricity supply to industries and other consumers across the country.

“The project involves the strategic connection of the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, creating two new transmission routes spanning a total distance of 14 kilometres.

“Before now, there was power generated but not evacuated. With this project, we are going to evacuate more power, meaning Nigerians will enjoy improved electricity supply,” he said.

Abdulaziz noted that the project would significantly improve operational flexibility within the national grid and strengthen power delivery in the Benin axis through direct connection to power generation plants in the corridor.

According to him, the new transmission lines will help reduce transmission bottlenecks, improve system reliability and provide distribution companies with increased access to bulk electricity for customers across Nigeria.
