The Federal Government has commissioned and handed over Flood control works executed through the Ecological Fund Office (EFO), in Enhwe community of Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The project was the construction of water drainages and culverts in Enhwe community which is a flood prone area.
According to a statement by the EFO, drainages were constructed in each of the five kindred of Enhwe community to discharge to the ocean. In all a total of 1.4km drains were constructed.
At the formal commissioning/handover ceremony, recently, President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by the Director, Soil Erosion and Flood Control, Engr. Felix Okeke, maintained that no part of the country would be left out in his development strides irrespective of tribe religion or political considerations.
He also assured the people of his commitment to continue with the implementation of all government policies, agreements and contracts at both national and international levels.
Earlier in her speech, the Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Dr. Habiba Lawal, who was represented by a Deputy Director, Engr. Udochi Nwachukwu, said the project was among the third quarter projects approved by Mr. President in 2018 following a request by the community to help arrest perennial flooding menace in the area.
While commending the contractor, the consultant and the Ecological Fund Office team for timely completion of the project, Dr. Lawal stated that the importance of the commissioning and handover exercise was to enable the host community take over and at the same time exercise ownership over the project in order to ensure its maintenance and sustainability.
Members of Enhwe community testified that the completion of the project has brought great relief to them as they were no longer experiencing flood this rainy season.
