The federal government has commissioned an Oncology centre at the University Teaching Hospital, Benin, Edo State.
Speaking during the event, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, said two other cancer centres had been commissioned in Enugu and Katsina states, bringing the total world class Oncology centres to three.
He added “three new world-class oncology centers, located in Zaria, Jos and Lagos States are well in advanced stages of completion”.
He said President Bola Tinubu has delivered over 501 projects in health sector in within two years.

According to him, the projects were implemented across 61 federal tertiary hospitals and revitalised thousands of primary healthcare centres nationwide, including those in Edo.
Pate who decried poor investment in health sectors in the past, noted that the president deliberately chose the sector that affects the lives of the ordinary citizen and decided to make that impact.
Earlier, UBTH’s Chief Medical Director Prof. Darlington Obaseki, said the centre would be a game-changer for cancer treatment and bring succour to cancer sufferers in the South South region.
He disclosed that over 4,300 cancer patients were attended to at the hospital in 2024 alone, which he said underscore the crucial need for functional radiotherapy equipment.
“For 10 years, our cobalt radiation machine was down. Today, that challenge has been solved. This centre will serve not just Edo people, but others South South states,” he said.
