President Goodluck Jonathan commissioned the service tagged NgREN with hope that  it will help Nigerian universities compete with their peers across the globe.
 Represented by supervising minister of education, Nyesom Wike, Jonathan called on the Ministry of Science and Technology and other stakeholders to give the programme necessary support for its success.
 Objectives of the service include: “To provide an efficient network infrastructure for the research and education  community and establish a framework that will enable resource sharing and facilitate innovation and development.”
 It is also expected “to promoted linkages and collaboration between the research community, industry, government and other international research and education communities in order to transform research into commercial products for the benefit of the nation.”
  Federal Government also expects the service “to provide network services and applications such as identity federation, e-content, hosting, network security, bandwidth management, IP technology, video-conferencing among others to the research community.”
The minister and other dignitaries later went into the NgREN center named after former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Peter Okebukola to interact with various federal universities benefiting from the programme through video-conferencing.
 The benefiting universities include University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Lagos, Usmanu Danfodio University, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson and Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Julius Okogie,  assured of support for sustainability of the project which is funded partly by the World Bank Group.
