The Federal Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Nasarawa State Government, has commissioned Nigeria’s first Vehicular Air Emissions Testing Centre at the Sani Abacha Bus Terminal, Maraba, Nasarawa State.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, described the centre as a landmark facility established under the framework of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and in commemoration of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies 2025.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mahmud Adam Kambari, the minister said the facility marks a bold step towards achieving cleaner air quality through the regulation of vehicle maintenance, emissions, and compliance with global environmental standards.

He explained that the centre would serve as a focal point for scientific study, testing, and policy enforcement to ensure that Nigeria’s air quality meets internationally accepted benchmarks.

“As we prepare to launch the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) and commemorate the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies 2025, I encourage vehicle owners to take advantage of this opportunity to test their vehicles’ emissions and embrace proper maintenance practices. This will ensure cleaner air and a healthier environment,” Lawal said.

The minister warned that air pollution remains a “silent killer,” affecting quality of life, agricultural productivity, and public health.

He noted that it cuts across all demographics and is linked to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, strokes, and even neurological conditions such as autism, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and dementia.

Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Bahijjahtu Abubabkar, expressed appreciation to the Nasarawa State Government for providing the site for the pilot project.

The centre will be run by Bhustan Energy and Environmental Services Limited, a technical partner of the Federal Ministry of Environment.
