Kaduna State Government has partnered with the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) to address the high rate of maternal mortality in seven Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

According to Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, National Coordinator of MAMII, the initiative aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by providing access to quality healthcare services and identifying the drivers of maternal deaths.

He, however, raised concern that out of 172 LGAs in the country, seven in Kaduna were faced with high maternal deaths.

Dr. Adeyanju speaking with newsmen in Kaduna yesterday shortly after a 4-day workshop on how to tackle problem of the mortality explained that a document has been prepared at the workshop and handed over to Kaduna state government for action to crash the rate.

He said, “We are looking at the drivers of maternal deaths to ensure that women have access to the care that is being provided in line with the mandate in line with the MAMII strategy, looking at where are the women dying, before now 172 LGAs in Nigeria, and Kaduna has about seven of those LGA’s.”

He commended the political will of the government of Kaduna state towards ensuring issues of maternal mortality is adequately addressed.

The state Commissioner of health, Hajiya Umma Ahmed, emphasised the state government commitment to work with the initiative to crash the maternal and neonatal mortality in the state.

Similarly, Council chairmen from seven local government areas and traditional rulers concerned about maternal deaths in Kaduna state were present at Sir Kashim Ibrahim house with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, to receive a roadmap report on ending maternal mortality from the MAMII Coordinator.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Adeyanju, said the delegation was in Kaduna to present its findings and recommendations on improving maternal health outcomes in the state.

In her response, the Deputy Governor reiterated the state government’s commitment to ending maternal mortality.

“Kaduna is committed to reducing maternal deaths, and I hope the Ministry of Health will also put in the necessary effort to see this through,” she said.
