The Federal Government’s final evacuation flight from South Africa arrived in Lagos on Wednesday with 308 Nigerians on board.

The aircraft, which also carried three government officials, landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 11:30 a.m., bringing to an end the repatriation exercise in which more than 1,500 Nigerians were evacuated.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, said President Bola Tinubu’s intervention helped save Nigerians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

She said the President’s decision to extend the evacuation beyond the June 30 deadline issued by anti-migrant groups demonstrated his commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.

“His extension of the evacuation exercise beyond the June 30 deadline speaks volumes about his unwavering commitment to the welfare of our nationals in crisis situations,” she said.

The minister welcomed the returnees and commended Nigerian officials in South Africa for coordinating the evacuation successfully.
