The federal government, yesterday, directed the retired military officers to help in securing Nigeria’s ungoverned spaces.
It said the deployment was part of the strategies to strengthen national security and drive economic activities in conflict-affected areas.
The development followed the inauguration of an 18-man committee set up by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.).
Musa, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Richard Pheelangwa, at the inauguration, tasked the veterans with reclaiming ungoverned spaces for economic viability.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Information, Enderline Chukwu, on behalf of the Director of Information and Public Relations, Musa also tasked the committee to reposition the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires and Veterans.
Speaking at the event, which was held on Tuesday at the Ministry of Defence headquarters, Abuja, Musa said the deployment of veterans into ungoverned spaces would complement ongoing military operations.
He explained that this would bring experienced personnel into local security and development efforts, particularly in areas where state presence remains weak.
The minister noted that the initiative reflects a strategic shift from an over-reliance on military offensives to a more inclusive and sustainable approach to security that tackles the socio-economic drivers of insecurity.
Musa stressed that the initiative was part of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that veterans who served the country with honour are empowered to live productive lives after retirement, while still contributing to national stability.
