It is pleasing to note the very good intention of the federal government to ameliorate the current suffering of the less-privileged and the downtrodden people in the country as a result of the present COVID-19 pandemic which remedy is yet to be identified.
Having said that, however, the humanitarian ministry in charge of reaching out to the people seems to lack the organisational ability to arrange the smooth and well coordinated distribution of money and other interventions to the citizens as a result of many factors including:
- Lack of, or failure to involve professionals who deal in money matters to organise and monitor transactions day-in-day out.
- There is no template to facilitate distribution in a conducive and secure environment. This must be put in place.
- Payment manually at this digital age is unacceptable and a misnomer. It is a clear violation of best practices. With such rowdy situation as seen in the electronic media, it means no proper financial record will be obtained and even kept for reconciliation with amount released from the Treasury.
The federal government’s slogan of honesty and transparency can only be achieved if standard procedure is observed in handing sensitive matters to eliminate loss of public trust.
