The federal government said it distributed over 1.9 million bags of fertiliser to nearly one million farmers as part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity and strengthen food security nationwide.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement forum on Agricultural and Food Systems Transformation in Abuja, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, outlined key interventions and achievements under the current administration.
Kyari said the fertiliser distribution was complemented by 12,000 litres of organic fertiliser, while 109 fertiliser inspectors and 329 industry stakeholders were trained on regulatory compliance to curb fake agricultural inputs.
He added that the ministry established a National Reference Laboratory and upgraded the National Fertiliser Management Platform to improve quality control. Over 3,500 farmers were also trained on sustainable soil management practices.
On mechanisation, the minister said the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme launched in 2025 led to the deployment of 2,000 tractors and other agricultural equipment nationwide.
He noted that 10 large-scale integrated processing plants were established across the six geopolitical zones, alongside seven composite flour milling factories.
Kyari further said that under the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ), 7,398 farmers had been profiled, 409 hectares cultivated under climate-resilient practices, and rice yields improved to an average of five metric tonnes per hectare.
On the National Agricultural Growth Scheme–Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP), he said over 647,500 farmers were registered, with 622,818 supported with subsidised inputs, leading to a 30 per cent increase in crop production in participating states.
He also disclosed that the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation provided N700 billion risk cover for 199,275 farmers, while the Bank of Agriculture received a N250 billion facility to offer single-digit interest loans to smallholder farmers.
Kyari said the ministry was also prioritising women and youth through improved access to credit, training and climate-smart agriculture initiatives, as well as the adoption of the First Lady’s “Every Home a Garden” programme to encourage household food production.
He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration and investment would further strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector and enhance food security.
