The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) with support from the German government and the European Union through the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) have launched national guidelines for interconnecting solar mini-grids to distribution networks.
Speaking during the launch yesterday, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power, Alhaji Mahmuda Mamman, said renewable energy, particularly solar energy, play a strategic role in advancing the federal government’s objective of expanding electricity access, improving energy security and driving sustainable electronic economic development.
He said interconnected and isolated solar milling grids are increasingly providing a reliable electricity supply to communities’ neediest and productive users who previously lacked adequate access to power.
He added that ad the electricity market continues to grow, it becomes imperative to establish clear technical and operational framework that will ensure safety, reliability and efficient coordination between solar grid systems and the existing distribution infrastructures.
“The launch of this guideline is timely. I encourage the distribution companies, mini grid developers, financials, technical service providers and all industry stakeholders to ensure effective implementation and compliance with the provisions of these guidelines.
“Collaboration among the parties will be essential to unlock the potential of interconnected solar mini grids. In order to achieve this, the country has already signed a compact in Tanzania 2025 of the Mission 300 for providing access to energy in Africa,” he said.

 

On his part, NEMSA’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Olusegun Adesayo, said the guidelines provide clarity on technical requirements, roles and responsibilities, and interconnection processes for interconnected solar mini-grids

 

He said this will reduce uncertainty and improving coordination among stakeholders.

 

He added that the new testing equipment will enhance the quality, accuracy, and efficiency of solar mini grid inspections and assessments.

 

Representing the Delegation of the European Union to the Federal Republic of Nigeria & ECOWAS, Godfrey Ogbemudia, Programme Manager, said the launch of the guidelines is particularly significant and will provide consistency, increase investor confidence in interconnected mini-grid projects.

 

He further reiterated the commitment of the European Union to continuously support Nigeria’s energy transition and electrification ambitions.
