The Federal Government through the Ecological Fund office has flagged off the construction of two major erosion sites in Abia State at a cost of N700 million.

The sites, which are at Ukwu-Udara, Amachara, Amankwo Ezeleke and Okwe, Oboro in Ikwuano, are part of the 22 erosion sites approved by the National Ecological Fund for urgent action.

Speaking at the flag off, the House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Climate Change and member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South, Sam Ifeanyi Onuigbo, lamented that the devastating effects of erosion on Ikwuano/Umuahia lands have led to loss of land economic resources and often times, a deletion of parts of the roads.

Onuigbo stated that he was moved to engage the National Ecological Fund for intervention because of how much erosion affects the economic wellbeing of his people, and inter-village access.

He thanked the acting Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mrs Habiba Lawal, who is also in-charge of the Ecological Fund office for working hard to ensure the projects were listed among those awarded across the country.  

He said it is expected that work on both sites will check the erosion menace and stop its encroachment on the road, especially on the Okwe, Oboro site.

The lawmaker flagged off the commencement of work at Ukwu-Udara, Amachara, Amankwo Ezeleke.

Speaking on behalf of the agency, Emmanuel Emeka, said the National Ecological Fund would ensure the speedy completion of work according to the specification and design.
