The federal government, Thursday, flagged off the construction of 1,068km Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.

The six-lane road would pass through seven states of Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states with Sokoto State covering 120km of the project.

The Sokoto-Badagry project is coming up five months after the flagging off of a similar project; Lagos-Calabar Superhighway.

Speaking at the occasion, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, said the project was aimed at improving the wellbeing of Nigerians.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the first phase of the project would be completed in 2027.

He said the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry projects would cost the government a total of N13tr with 52% of the road located in the north and 48% in the south.

He explained that the 258km portion of the project would be flagged off in Kebbi State today (Friday) after which Niger State’s portion of the road would be flagged off.

The minister said the federal government had adopted concrete roads to ensure quality projects, noting that the government would not compromise on quality work in all its projects.

In his address, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, said he would personally monitor the construction work to ensure adherence to contract specifications by the contractor handling the project.

Sultan Abubakar called on the FG to ensure the timely completion of the project, as according to him it would improve the wellbeing of many Nigerians.
