The federal government said it created the animal production and husbandry services unit under the ministry of agriculture in order to engineer a vibrant livestock sector in the country.
Minister for Agriculture, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, stated this during the inauguration of the members of the 3rd Council of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in Abuja.
Adesina used the platform to deny media reports that the federal government has banned the consumption of ‘Kpomo’, a local delicacy from animal skin, saying, however, that government would regulate its consumption to improve the leather industry.
While speaking, minister of state for agriculture Hajiya Asabe Asma’u Ahmed said the various industry standards and the minimum operating procedures developed by the institute have resulted into high consumer confidence in the industry.
In his acceptance speech, the new President of the 3rd Council of the institute, Professor Folorunso Adu, said the institute will remain grateful for the tremendous support of the ministry, especially for the creation of the department of animal production and husbandry services.
Professor Adu said that lack of funds to operate zonal offices and begin the institute’s postgraduate college to enhance the skills of members, were some of the challenges currently facing the institute.
