FG, investors to partner Delta on Okpai Power Plant completion – Sen. Nwoko

The federal government and private investors are set to collaborate with the Delta State government to provide funding for the completion of the Okpai Power Plant project.

This development, aimed at boosting electricity supply in Kwale and the entire Delta North Senatorial District, was disclosed by Senator Ned Nwoko during a courtesy visit to the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge.

Speaking at the palace, Nwoko revealed that discussions with the Minister of Budget and National Planning had reached an advanced stage to secure exceptional funding for the power plant’s step-down project.

“We are making progress with the Federal Government to ensure this step-down project is completed. This initiative will address electricity issues in Delta North and beyond,” he said.

The Okpai Power Plant, located in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, recently expanded its capacity to 980 megawatts but has yet to deliver electricity to its host communities, a situation Senator Nwoko described as unacceptable. “This power plant, commissioned by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005, was intended to serve Delta North. It is time we ensure it fulfills that purpose,” he stated.

“There are financiers who have expressed willingness to fund these projects. They only require guarantees to recover their investments over a 20 to 24-year period. Once those guarantees are in place, the projects will proceed,” Nwoko explained.

The Asagba of Asaba commended Senator Nwoko’s initiatives and pledged the support of the traditional institution in ensuring the successful implementation of these projects.
