National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has in collaboration with the Kogi State Government organised a mathematics competition for 120 JSS2 girls in the state to overcome math phobia.

Speaking at the commencement of the exercise in Lokoja, SDGs’ Assistant Desk Officer at the National Mathematical Centre, Adebayo Phillip said the competition was designed to address the phobia girls usually have for mathematics and to spur their interests for the subject.

He said the competition which took taking place simultaneously across the 36 states of the federation and FCT is being supported by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of efforts to encourage girls’ education in the country.

“. We will select the best three from the second round and they will be crowned as “Mathematics Queens” at the state level.

“The best three will be subsequently invited from all the states to Abuja for the national level round after which the overall best will be crowned as Nigeria’s Mathematics Queen by Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari”, he said.
