The Federal Government of Nigeria on Thursday launched the Group Individual and Family Social Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP) to help all Nigerian families benefit from the health insurance services.
The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, who launched the package in Abuja, said it was a product of the lessons learnt and the experience gained from implementing the previous programme, the Vital Contributors Social Health Insurance Programme (VCSHIP).

He said the new programme would address the challenges and barriers encountered during implementation of the VCSHIP, both by beneficiaries and operators.
He said saying GIFSHIP would eliminate known difficulties as it creates additional value by expanding and upgrading VCSHIP for better reach, service quality and user experience.
He said the major objective of GIFSHIP was to rapidly expand the scope of healthcare coverage in the nation’s quest to attain Universal Health Coverage.
Executive Secretary, National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Sambo Muhammed, said the new programme would enable individuals, families and groups to join the NHIS ecosystem.
