Nigeria government has launched an advanced cutting-edge plastic polyethylene manufacturing technology upgrade machine as part of its move to embrace circular economy practices that promote reuse, recycling, and sustainable production of plastics.
The project, which was implemented by UNIDO under its promotion of Circular Economy Practices, was funded by the government of Japan.
Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, during the launch in Abuja, on Thursday, said the milestone is part of the project titled “Promoting Sustainable Plastics Value Chains Through Circular Economy Practices,” which exemplifies their unwavering commitment to achieving environmental sustainability and our vision of a greener, more eco-conscious future for all Nigerians.
We are all aware that plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, affecting marine life, soil fertility, and human health.
He said: “As a nation, we have witnessed the adverse effects of improper plastic waste disposal which has contributed to flooding, air pollution and a loss of biodiversity. Today, we reaffirm our collective resolve to transform the plastic value chain by embracing circular economy practices. ”
“The transition to a circular economy is no longer an option but a necessity. By shifting from a linear model where plastics are produced, used and discarded to a circular approach, we ensure that plastic materials remain in the economy for as long as possible,” he added.
While noting that the approach is not only environmentally sound, he said it is also economically viable as it creates new job opportunities, supports local industries, and reduces dependence on virgin raw materials.
The minister however, urged manufacturers, policymakers and communities to intensify efforts in promoting responsible plastic consumption and waste management in Nigeria and beyond.
Speaking, National Programme Officer, UNIDO, Mr. Osu Otu said one of the major outcomes of the project is to demonstrate the benefits of adopting circular economy practices and resource-efficient production for plastic value chains in Nigeria.
He said by integrating circular economy principles into plastic waste management, they are making tangible strides toward reducing plastic leakage into the environment and promoting a cleaner, greener future.
“This initiative reflects our collective commitment to tackling plastic pollution, advancing resource efficiency, and fostering sustainable industrial development in Nigeria.”
“At UNIDO, we are deeply committed to supporting sustainable industrial development and effective environmental management. As part of the delivery of this project, UNIDO supported Environmental Expressions Limited, a plastic waste recycling company selected as a pilot beneficiary for this advanced recycling technology,’ he said.
While noting that the investment underscores the importance of leveraging innovation to improve production efficiency, enhance product quality, and at the same time address one of Nigeria’s most challenging plastic waste streams, water sachets and polyethylene (PE) film , he said the technologies will minimize production interruptions, improve raw material quality, and enhance overall operational efficiency, ensuring that more plastic waste is effectively recycled rather than ending up in dumpsites or the environment.
Also the Deputy Head of Mission, Japan Embassy, Hitoshi Kozaki, said: “The project marks an important step forward in their joint efforts to tackle plastic pollution in Nigeria and to achieve more effective plastic waste management for sustainable development.
“The Laser Filter System and Sand Remover System being handed over will be an innovative initiative that supports that Nigeria handles its challenging plastic waste management, especially water sachets and polyethylene film, making recycling more efficient and effective,” he said.
While noting that Japan recognises the critical importance of reducing marine plastic pollution with the ambitious goal of achieving zero new pollution by 2050, he said the project is a tangible manifestation of their commitments and dedication to supporting Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable industrial development.
