Speaking in Abuja at the workshop, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Macjohn Nwaobiala, said teacher’s quality and the quality of instruction have declined, contributing to poor performance of students in examinations nationwide.
Represented by the deputy director of languages, Mr. Anota Ademola, the permanent secretary said in order to address this trend, there was need to sensitise appropriate officers in states and the FCT on the new curriculum.
He explained that during the conduct of the annual basic education certificate examination, many examination officers have failed to reflect the correct nomenclatures of subjects like English studies, basic science and basic technology on the examination timetable.
“This inability on the part of schools to use the right curriculum to teach effectively has contributed to mass failure in external examinations,” he said.
While describing the training as train-the-trainer workshop, he said officers trained were expected to go back to their states to train school administrators and teachers on effective implementation of the new curriculum.
The director of basic and secondary education, Bar D. Uwaezuoke, who was represented by Mrs. Comfort Egeonu Nwaeke, said the ultimate goal of the new curriculum was to meet the key ideals of the National
Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS), value re-orientation, poverty eradication, job creation and wealth generation.
Uwaezuoke added that it was also meant to ensure the acquisition of functional education and ensure solid foundation for technical, vocational and entrepreneurship education.
He said: “We are all aware that teachers quality as well as the quality of instruction, contribute significantly to the success of learners in any examination.”
