The Federal Government has constituted a committee to drive the development of high-speed rail infrastructure in Nigeria, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s transport system and boost economic growth.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this recently during the Quarterly Stakeholders Engagement of the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC).

According to him, the initiative is being driven by the Federal Government through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, with a focus on leveraging private sector participation to deliver modern, high-speed rail systems across the country.

Opeifa explained that the move is part of broader efforts by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition Nigeria’s rail sector and improve connectivity between key economic hubs.

He noted that the development of high-speed rail would complement ongoing investments in conventional rail infrastructure, enhance mobility, and reduce pressure on road transport.

The NRC boss also stressed the importance of integrating rail systems with other modes of transportation, particularly ports, to create a seamless and efficient logistics network.

According to him, efficient rail connectivity remains critical to unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s maritime sector, as it would facilitate faster cargo evacuation, reduce congestion, and lower the cost of moving goods across the country.

Opeifa added that the government is committed to expanding rail infrastructure nationwide, with several projects already underway to link major cities and industrial corridors.

 

He cited ongoing efforts to connect existing rail lines to key ports, including Apapa, Tin Can Island, Warri, and Port Harcourt, as part of a broader strategy to enhance trade and logistics efficiency.

 

The constitution of the committee marks a significant step toward the realisation of high-speed rail in Nigeria, signalling increased government focus on modern transport solutions and infrastructure development.
