Over 50 officials of the Federal Ministry of Health and other ministries departments and agencies have each received a copy of a 72-page document titled “Nigeria Benchmark Medical Zone (BMZ) Project” in Abuja.
The objective of the over N170 billion Nigeria BMZ project is to reverse the increasing outflow of funds spent by rich Nigerians seeking medical treatment oversees, and to increase availability of quality healthcare to every Nigerian. The ultimate objective is to uplift Nigeria’s healthcare system to measure up to global standards in 2020.
The proposal, presented by Alpha Zomax Consultants, International of the United States of America, is designed to establish a Benchmark Medical Zone (BMZ) in each of the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Dr. Lasbry Uzoma Nze, Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, said the Nigeria BMZ project features four major components in each BMZ Center of Medical Excellence (COME); including a state of-the-art hospital, and local production of vaccines.
Others include housing estate and support facilities, and proactive boosting of availability and delivery of vaccines, essential medicines and equipment from donor agencies.
