Speaker Cross River State House of Assembly, John Gaul Lebo has appealed to the Federal Government to pay the state the N7 billion former Governor Liyel Imoke used to repair federal roads in the state.
Speaking with journalists in Calabar on Friday, the speaker said the former governor had made appeals for the refund to no avail, pleading that the refund has become imperative in view of the state’s mounting debt profile.
According to him the incumbent governor, Professor Ben Ayade has since made similar application to the Federal Government.
He said the Ayade administration cannot proceed with the proposed superhighway construction without being getting the money to fix existing roads.
“If the Federal Government refunds this money, we could use it to repair more roads which have gone very bad, especially the Akpabuyo/Bakassi and Odukpani federal roads which have been impassable,” he said.
