The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is collaborating with various multinational corporations to solve the problem of post-harvest losses.
Managing director, Euroase Consult Limited, Mr. Don Ekesiobi, stated this at a press conference on the forthcoming Agricultural Value Chain Workshop in Abuja.
Mr. Ekesiobi noted that farmers in Nigeria were still grappling with poor yields, farm infrastructure and poor post-harvest technology, which resulted in many crop decay and waste.
He said some of the foreign corporations like Dayu Irrigation would revolutionise the nation’s agricultural sector with their advanced technologies, adding that Pentair USA, which is the world leader in aquaculture and fish farming technology used in over 110 countries would also scale up production in the country.
Mr. Serhart Ocakcglo, the Managing Director Middle East and Africa for Jonhson Control Incorporated, one of the global leaders in farm post-harvest preservation of all crops including vegetables, fruits yam, said the technologies would create huge wealth in Nigeria, noting that post-harvest losses reduced the income of farmers by half.
He said the company had already done all the necessary assessment of the Nigerian situation and was working with local partners for the successful adoption of the technology, which, he said, are very affordable.
