The Abuja to Kaduna highway which was repaired not too long ago to ease traffic due to the closure of the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Abuja, has been in the news lately, albeit for the wrong reason. The route has assumed notoriety as a haven for dare-devil kidnappers, armed robbers and other shady characters. But what caught my attention however was the media report talking about additional grant by the federal government to further repair the same highway when many others are in terrible state of disrepair.
I’m not in any way averse to this new positive development, but I’m concerned about the state of other roads across the country, notable among them, the Kano-Zaria highway which has become a death-trap, claiming many lives on daily basis.
Indeed, even people who did not vote for the APC government in the last presidential election and have done everything to truncate its success are now smiling courtesy of the works that are on-going on many roads.
But the Kano-Zaria road is not among roads undergoing rehabilitation. I must state here that the Kano to Zaria highway can only be compared with the Lagos to Ibadan expressway in terms of economic importance to the nation. The road serves as link between two states with huge economic activities. I call on the government to do something urgent about the road.
