BREAKING: FG speaks on new minimum wage
The Federal Government on Thursday in Abuja, pledged to ensure full implementation of the National Policy on Productivity.
Sen. Chris Ngige, Minister, Labour and Employment, made the pledge at a news conference on the Observance of the 16th National Productivity Day and Conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit Award.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Productivity Day would be celebrated on Feb. 21.
“It is pertinent to state that development of the National Policy on Productivity has created conditions for rapid and sustained productivity growth in all sectors as it provide a systematic and comprehensive roadmap.
“Let me pledge the government’s commitment to ensure the full implementation of the policy.
“As you are aware, this government’s commitment to change cannot be over- emphasised as it will improve the standard of living of Nigerians.
“The government is conscious of the critical place of productivity in the realisation of the ‘Change Agenda.’
“As no nation can be self-reliant and competitive in the national market without productivity improvement in all sectors of the economy, ‘’he said.
The minister said that a key point of the policy document was the declaration of a day to be celebrated as the National Productivity Day (NPD) in Abuja and simultaneously in all states of the Federation.
Ngige said that the National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM), Award, was an award to honour excellence and dignity, conferred on the most productive individuals and organisations in Nigeria.
He noted that since the inception of the programme, 303 individuals and 73 organisations have benefited from the award.
The minister said that the observance of the NPD and conferment of the NPOM was one positive step by government to stimulate the psyche of Nigerians towards redirecting their efforts to growth and development of the economy.
“At both the individual and organisational levels, the NPOM is a thoughtful incentive scheme designed to positively affect productivity.
“The award has indeed been creating the desired awareness and competitive spirit among government officials at the Federal, state and Local government levels and the private sector.
“As more organisation and individuals are recognissed and rewarded for higher productivity through the NPOM award, the foundation for productivity conscioness and improvement is being laid and consolidated in Nigeria, ‘’he said.
Ngige, however, said that as part of the activities to mark the National Productivity Day, there would be a lecture aptly titled, “Productivity for Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Employment.”
He also said that the Guest Speaker of the Day would be Dr Kayode Fayemi, Minister of Mines and Steel Development.
He added that 15 individuals and five oragnisations drawn from all sectors of the economy would be conferred with the National Productivity Order of Merit Award at this year’s National Productivity Day celebration.
Speaking, Mr Kashim Akor, Director General of National Productivity Centre (NPC), said the criteria used in selecting the awardees were the level of impact made by the awardees in their community for the development of the economy.
“We have received nomination from over 2000 contestants, as award forms were sent to various states government, manufacturer organisations and other professional bodies.
“So, we were able to filter from the over 2,000 nominees, the very best, competence, hardworking and also have spirit of entrepreneur.
“So, we are selecting from the best of the best,‘’ he said. (NAN)
