The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and 31 other Member Countries, has proposed Noma’s inclusion as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) official disease listing.

The proposal was presented by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Ali Pate, on Wednesday, during the opening of NOMA Centre in Abuja.

The minister noted that the initiative was supported by numerous nations, which aims to secure global recognition for the battle against Noma.

Represented by the Director of Hospital Service, Dr. Jimoh Olawole Salaudeen, the Minister, emphasized the urgency of addressing Noma (cancrum oris).

The Minister highlighted MSF’s crucial support, contributing to comprehensive activities for Noma survivors, adding: “This center aims to restore dignity, provide employment opportunities, and serve as a learning hub for microvascular surgery specialists.”

Representing the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Director, Mary Dewan, commended Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to combating Noma.

She acknowledged the Minister’s leadership and Nigeria’s plea to include Noma in the NTD list.

Dewan expressed gratitude for the new National Noma Treatment Center, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

Prof. Muhammad Raji, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, expressed confidence that he would ensure that the team running the Centre uphold the highest standards of care and treatment.
