The federal government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has commenced the construction of a 2.5MW solar hybrid power project at the Afaka campus of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
The project, which is under the Energising Education Programme (EEP) phase two, is being funded with support from the World Bank.

Other benefiting institutions in the second phase include the University of Abuja, University of Maiduguri and its teaching hospital; Michael Opara University of Agriculture, Umudike; the University of Calabar and its teaching hospital; Federal University Gashua and the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
According to the contractors – Dongfang Electric Corporation – Mutual Commitment Company (DEC – MCC) – the project is expected to be completed in 12 months.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by the Minister of Defence, Major-General Bashir Magashi (retd), charged the REA to ensure the delivery of a high-standard and quality project that would ensure sustainable power supply for the academy.
The managing director of the REA, Salihijo Ahmed, said the project was part of efforts of the federal government towards ensuring equitable distribution of power supply to communities, as well as Nigerian universities.
