Vice President Namadi Sambo stated this in his address at the National Housing and Slum Summit held in Abuja.
The Vice President said that the housing deficit in the country remains huge and can only be gradually reduced over a period of time through the active engagement of all key stakeholders.
According to him, the rate of urbanization, which is unprecedented in Nigeria history, has continued to further fuel the growth of slums in our urban cities.
“In developing the proposed National Strategy for Mass Housing Delivery and Slums Upgrading, it is important to note that while mass housing provision and slum prevention are intertwined, the eradication of slums cannot be realized through the building of houses alone. We, therefore, need to embrace a new approach which emphasis the development of cities in which housing provision generate a new economic sector through the multiplier effects unleashed, arising from job and wealth creation, evolvement of new communities, massive infrastructural development/upgrade and the creation of other forms of economic opportunities.”
Also speaking,  supervising minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Architect Musa Sada  said that the best approach to grow the housing and urban development sector is to put in place the enabling policy and strategic frame works for its revitalization.
He said that the ministry has commenced action on the development of a National Housing and Urban Development sector road map.
“We have recognized the need and, are therefore, committed to the development of Sub- National Policies on Lands, Social Housing and Housing Maintenance, to mention a few. A National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP), with a strong element of housing and regional development, is gradually being finalized, as well as a revised national building code,” said the minister.
He added that the development of a National Housing and Slum Strategy will complement the on-going efforts to rapidly transform the housing and urban sector in a holistic and comprehensive manner.
