The federal government has expressed concern over the rising cost of fertilisers across Africa, urging development partners to address the structural vulnerabilities exposed by global supply disruptions.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, spoke on the sidelines of the France-Africa Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, where he said the worsening crisis in the Middle East had further intensified fertiliser shortages and price increases across the continent.

The meeting, organised by the International Fund for Agricultural Development and its partners, focused on tackling key challenges affecting agricultural productivity and food security in Africa.

 

Kyari noted that the severe fertiliser shortage facing the continent has significantly increased prices and poses a major threat to farmers’ productivity.

 

He said the Nigerian government is developing a comprehensive strategy to cushion the impact of the crisis and ensure fertilisers are readily available and affordable for farmers nationwide.

 

The minister also called on France and other development partners to provide concrete support to Nigeria and other African countries in strengthening food security initiatives, improving agricultural resilience, and addressing vulnerabilities caused by global supply chain disruptions.

 

He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working with international partners to build a more secure and productive agricultural sector capable of feeding its growing population and contributing to Africa’s food sovereignty.
