The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), Dr. Bukar Hassan has said that all efforts directed at increased agricultural productivity without putting in place a comprehensive and functional pest management programme are likely to be thwarted by trans-boundary migratory pests such as Quela birds,  grasshoppers,  locusts, Armyworms,  tsetse flies, rodents among others, 

Speaking recently at a 2-day meeting of the National Consultative Committee on pest control with the theme: “Repositioning and Strengthening of pest control services in agricultural productivity in Nigeria” the permanent secretary said such pests are known to have high propensity for massive destruction of crops if not timely controlled.

Hassan, who was represented by the Director of Agricultural Transformation Agenda in the ministry, James Ejeh, said “these grave implications are frightening and inimical to the realization of the goals of the Green Alternative Programe (GAP) and thus, the reason and justification for government’s huge annual spending on trans-boundary migratory pest control operations.’’
