The federal government says it is targeting over N300 billion annually through the distribution of five million date palm seedlings in 2025.
Director General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), Alhaji Saleh Abubakar, disclosed this during the agency’s shelterbelt and plantation flag-off event in Maimalari village, Yusufari Local Government Area of Yobe State.
He said the five million seedlings, produced by the agency, would be distributed across 11 frontline states to enhance their economic status.
“Each seedling has the capacity to produce 100 kilograms of dates, worth about one million naira in the market. And each date palm produces twice a year. Our projection shows that over N300 billion would be generated by farmers, which will indeed boost the nation’s economic status,” he said.
Abubakar added that the initiative aims to strengthen the forest economy and contribute to Nigeria’s target of generating over N300 billion through forest-based economic activities in the 11 frontline states.
