The federal government has reiterated its commitment to repositioning tourism as a major driver of economic diversification, with a focus on infrastructure development, partnerships, and sustainable growth.

The Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, stated this at the WelcomeToNigeria Expo 2025, held at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja.

The two-day event, themed “National Agenda for Tourism Partnership on Infrastructure Development, Institutional Linkages, Growth and Sustainable Development,” brought together government officials, investors, and creative industry leaders to chart a new course for Nigeria’s tourism sector.

Musawa said the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu recognised tourism as a key non-oil sector capable of boosting jobs and national revenue.

“Tourism is no longer a peripheral sector; it is an engine of economic vitality. We are working with stakeholders to improve destination accessibility, develop tourism corridors, and attract private sector investment through public-private partnerships,” she said.

She added that the ministry is strengthening collaboration with agencies across transport, health, security, and ICT to remove bottlenecks, harmonise policies, and ensure that tourism is integrated into national development plans.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Mukthar Yawale Muhammad, said infrastructure remains the bedrock of tourism viability, adding that the government is exploring innovative models such as tourism zones and incentive-driven investment schemes.

Sunday M. Bisong, Assistant Director overseeing the Domestic Tourism Promotion Department, stressed the need for a national framework to support domestic tourism infrastructure.

“Nigeria’s domestic tourism is already valued at over ₦4.9 trillion, but without a coordinated framework for roads, lodging, and site facilities, growth will remain limited,” he said.

He urged states and private investors to partner with the federal government to unlock the untapped potential of local destinations and cultural heritage sites.

Musawa called on private sector players to deepen their investments and build destination brands that can compete globally.

“This Expo is not just another gathering, it is a call to action. We must transform the ideas and dialogues of today into policies, projects, and partnerships that deliver impact,” she added.
