Represented by Professor Muhammad Hamisu at the 7th commencement of AUN, the president said in the North-east education is critical and the university has the capacity to help other universities in the region to develop.  Jonathan commended the founder of the university, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, for extending the space of education in the country.
He called on other wealthy individuals to emulate the former vice president by establishing similar institutions in other zones of the country.
The university has graduated 210 professionals of different discipline comprising 184 undergraduates and 26 postgraduates.
A breakdown of the list showed that 24 graduates went home with first class degree certificates, seven with postgraduate diplomas and 19 with acquired master’s degrees (11 of them in business administration and four each in information technology and telecommunications).
Speaking at the occasion, the president of the university, Professor Margee Ensign, said: “Development is about opening up opportunities. It is about fostering dreams. It is about creating justice for everyone, creating prosperity for everyone. It is about forging a truly sustainable future. And perhaps, above all, it is about giving everyone, a voice and hope to the future.”
Ensign said the 2015 Nigerian general elections have opened the window of hope for the younger generation, describing the peaceful transfer of power in Nigeria as commendable. 
She said: “It is a revolution of hope, and promise in a continent, most importantly, a country. “The founder of our university, Atiku Abubakar, played a crucial role again in the opening up of Nigerian democracy, a central role in helping to establish the party which triumphed in the presidential election, and effective opposition party in bringing hope and promise and prosperity to Nigeria.
“That window of hope has opened wide for you, Class of 2015. So now is the time to create a new Nigeria. You, the Class of 2015 graduates, are about to enter that world as competent and educated adults. 
“Going forth to take your place in Nigeria’s national life in commerce, in education, in science, in politics and any career you choose. You go forth to be citizens and leaders of a free democratic Nigeria.” 
The AUN president said that the challenges facing Nigeria, Africa and the world were huge, adding that the responsibilities of the upcoming generations appeared “weighty but the opportunities to change for the better are equally there.”
The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, congratulated the graduates, saying: “It is significant that you are joining the Nigerian community to start your various professions at a significant period in the nation’s history.
“I want to urge you to become agents of the new Nigeria. I am certain you’ve been adequately prepared. I want to assure you that Nigeria is waiting for you, and the APC is going to, from the very minute it comes into office, start opening the doors of opportunity for you all.”
