Speaking at the opening ceremony of the West African Postal Conference (WAPCO) in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Communication Technology Dr Omobola Johnson said ECOWAS postal chiefs should be more vigilant now because criminals may want to explore postal services to perpetrate their activities.  Dr Johnson, who was represented by the permanent secretary Dr Tunji Olaopa, also urged them to safeguard and improve the quality of the sub-region and international postal services.
She also tasked them to rescue mail exchange and postal services from going into extinction as they are in the threshold of transition because of electronic mail challenge.
“Mail exchange and postal services is unarguable in the threshold of transition given the new mail delivery channels that information technology has created and their expanding frontiers. The value of convention postal services is however still there including regulations and standard setting,” she said.
In his welcome address, the Postmaster General of Nigeria Alhaji Ibrahim Mori Baba said the main objective of WAPCO is the coordination of postal activities and operations in the sub-region with a view to finding lasting solutions to myriad of challenges affecting the provision of efficient and qualitative postal services to the people of the sub-region.
