Shekarau stated this at the inauguration of governing councils of federal institutions, comprising 12 federal universities, four federal polytechnics and the national library.
He urged members of the councils to ensure that funds allocated to their institutions get adequately utilized.
“I urge you to explore other resources through endowment for the development of the institutions you represent and avoid any activity capable of disrupting academic activities. You should streamline education system in line with national and international standard,” he said.
Shekarau called on the councils’ members to adopt effective strategies to address social vices.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius A. Okojie, expressed delight that the 12 newly established federal universities have successfully commenced academic activities.
Okojie charged members of the governing council to contribute their quota towards the development of the institutions, saying: “You have specified roles to play for the development of these institutions.
“You should ensure that you carry your oversight functions diligently. This will ensure effective running of the 12 universities, four polytechnics and the national library.”
