The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has advised nurse leaders to acquire requisite competencies to enable them to provide consumer satisfaction in the health industry.

He stated this in Abuja during the 16th session of the nurse leaders conference organized by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Ehanire urged the nursing leaders to constantly develop themselves to keep up-to-date regardless of their age or past experience, as there are new lessons and trends coming up.

He said staying up-to-date helps gain consumer trust and confidence.

“For nurses to improve their role in health care delivery, they require determination and competencies to meet consumer needs. Good leadership ensures our healthcare system meets today’s changing environment.

“Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system. Hospitals and clinics depend on their patient and personnel management skills, innovation for health system strengthening. I encourage nursing leaders to accept that one never finishes learning.”

Chairman of the governing board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr Bola Abosede, said the theme of the conference, “Rebranding nursing for professional ascendancy and consumer’s satisfaction: The role of nurse leaders,” was appropriate for improving the capabilities of leaders and administrators of nursing education and practice towards innovative health care in the 21st century. 

She said the motives for rebranding and the quest for professional ascendency should be embraced by all nurse leaders for the benefit of the consumers and the nursing profession at large.
