The minister made the disclosure on Monday in Abuja during a meeting with members of the steering committee on the restructuring and commercialization of the FHA.
She said the census was underway to determine what has been achieved and what was left in the housing sector, saying “a lot have been done” in the sector since 2011.
According to her in spite of challenges and unproductive measures by the FHA in housing delivery, other means such as the Public -Private Partnership / Public- Public Partnership model initiated by the Federal Government has boosted the housing sector.
“For years and hitherto, we say the housing deficit in Nigeria is estimated at 17 million units,but I believe with projects embarked on so far, we have less than that,
She further said the census would also check states that had not met the minimum expectation in the sector and would commend those that have achieved the minimum standard.
“It would further strengthen our efforts to achieve our aim in the housing sector in line with the vision 20:2020,”she said.
The minister said the 36 state commissioners and the FCT had been asked to submit the total number of housing project delivered and those still in progress from 2011 to date.
She added that some states had already started collating data on housing projects embarked on.
She urged stakeholders in the sector to ensure the process and aim was successful.
She restated the ministry’s commitment in effective housing delivery in the country in line with the President Goodluck Jonathan’ transformation agenda.
“We have mass housing and affordable housing projects for the average/low income earners in the civil service, we also have housing projects for people in the informal sector,” she noted.
The minister noted that the housing census by the ministry was in collaboration with the Bureau of Statistic and Census Population Commission.
