The Federal Government has reconstituted the National Building Code Advisory Committee (NBCAC) to ensure full domestication and enforcement of the National Building Code across all 36 states.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf A. Atta, described the Code as the most important regulatory framework for the built environment.

He said it sets core standards for pre-design, design, construction, and post-construction processes to guarantee quality, safety, and professionalism in the building industry.

Tracing its history, Atta noted that work on the Code began in 1987 under the defunct National Council of Works and Housing, with subsequent workshops in 1989 and 1990.

After extensive consultations, the first National Building Code was signed into law in 2006 by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

However, enforcement has been slow due to weak ratification and compliance. He recalled that the first NBCAC was inaugurated in 2018 but was not reconstituted after its three-year tenure expired.

Committee Chairman, Arc. Mohammed J. Faworaja, pledged diligence, professionalism, and a thorough review of past reforms. He urged governors and state assemblies to adopt the Code, stressing its importance in curbing building collapses nationwide.
