Federal Government of Nigeria has indicated interest to expand the scope of the National Water Resources Institute Kaduna. The institute is a research and capacity building institution under the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, responsible for the training of water resources engineers in the country.
The Executive Director, National Water Resources Institute Kaduna, Dr. Emmanuel Adanu, made this known during an advocacy visit to the Vice Chancellor Ahmadu Bello University (A.B.U) Zaria, Prof. Ibrahim Garba.
ABU Zaria is one of the six Nigerian universities the institute is collaborating with as National Water Resources Capacity Building Network (NWRCBNet) to provide capacity building training to interested water resources officers.
During the visit, Dr. Adanu said that the rationale behind the visit was to follow up on the MoU Signed between the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, National Water Resources Institute and the six Nigerian universities in May 2015, which ABU was among.
Dr Adanu noted that, “initially the National Water Resources Institute Kaduna was targeted to lower and middle level manpower and to sustain water resources profession, we trained students to ND and HND levels, but now with partnership with the universities we can train officers up to degree and master degree levels on Integrated Water Resources Management.”
He added that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources had already set up the capacity building network centre in ABU with all the needed facilities for the programme to kick off.
He said the purpose of the collaboration with the universities was to strengthen institutions and human capacities through partnership for successful implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management in Nigeria, adding that the network would facilitate research in the Integrated Water Resources Management among the capacity building institutions.
