The Federal Government would tomorrow begin the implementation of the National Egg Production Scheme (NEGPRO) in a flag off ceremony in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Chief Audu Ogbeh stated this in an interaction with members of the technical committee on scheme Tuesday in Abuja
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has said that it got the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria to provide N10 billion for the implementation of the national egg production scheme.
This came after the ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Turns Farms Ltd in 2016 to develop the National Egg Production Scheme and subsequently inaugurated a Technical Committee to work with TUNS Farms on the scheme.
“Following the approval of CBN, the scheme would be piloted in six states selected from the six geo-political zones based on their comparative advantage and readiness to key into the scheme.
“Consequently letters conveying the approval of the state to pilot the implementation of the NEGPRO scheme in the selected states have been sent to the state governors. Anchors have also been selected and poultry farmers are currently being sensitized for further capacity building in relation to the scheme,” the ministry stated in a statement.
The states include Ondo, Kebbi, Kogi, Cross River, Bauchi and Abia.
The National Egg Production scheme (NEGPRO) is an initiative aimed at strengthening the egg production, processing and utilization capacity of the country.
The scheme is for the period of five years and it is expected to provide about 50 million table eggs daily for local consumptions, export and processing into egg powder for use in confectioneries and pharmaceuticals.
