The Federal Government has said it will terminate contracts awarded under the Renewed Hope Housing Estates programme to contractors who fail to deliver projects as agreed.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Dr Muttaka Rabe Darma, disclosed this while inspecting a housing project in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

“This is one of the Renewed Hope Estates Housing Programmes started by the Federal Government in 2024. The groundbreaking ceremony here in Yobe State was held on May 24, 2024, and exactly two years later, the project is only about 40 per cent completed.

“The contractors signed an agreement to complete the project within four months after commencement, but what we are seeing here is pathetic and cannot be tolerated,” he said. The minister stated that the ministry would review the performance of contractors handling the projects nationwide and take necessary action against defaulting firms. “We will investigate what is happening and terminate the contracts of contractors who are unable to perform. It will not be business as usual in this ministry,” he said.

The minister stressed that contractors must honour the terms of their agreements, adding that claims of inadequate funding could not justify project abandonment without formal requests for contract variation or extension.

He added that contractors who failed to seek proper contractual adjustments would face sanctions, including contract termination.

Darma further revealed that the Yobe housing project was valued at over N5 billion, warning that the government would not allow such a major investment to be wasted.
