Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop organised by the ministry in conjunction with WAAPP-Nigeria, the head of pest control, Mrs. Florence Omoniwu, said that in view of the state’s contribution to agricultural activities of the nation, it became imperative to retrain its farmers in new technologies and innovations.
Omoniwu said that the workshop would enable participants to gain appropriate knowledge on handling, use, maintenance and calibration of pesticide application equipment.
She emphasised the importance of proper adherence to the information made available to the stakeholders by the team of experts who made paper presentations, stressing that doing so would ensure safe environment and maximum crop yield.
Omoniwu said: “Calibration will help to ensure appropriate pesticide spray application rate, thereby avoiding both under and overdosing of pesticide on crops which may lead to wastage of pesticide products, time and money.”
Earlier, the field officer in charge of pest control in the federal ministry of agriculture in the state, Ameh Audu, urged the participants to make good use of the opportunity provided by the ministry to improve on pesticide handling and personal protective equipment usage.
