FG trains, empowers 250 smallholder farmers in Kano

The federal government has trained and empowered 250 smallholder crop, fish and poultry farmers in Kano State as a step towards addressing poverty among small holder farmers in the state.

Speaking to beneficiaries during the exercise, the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), Mr Temitope Fadeshemi, described the level of poverty in Nigeria as alarming and in need of urgent attention.

Represented by FMAFS’s zonal director, Malam Isa Isyaku Hotoro, he said the recent report that estimated that 88.4 million Nigerians were living in extreme poverty was worrisome.

He added that the empowerment and training was organized by the ministry in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, adding that the beneficiaries were selected from the 44 local government areas of the state.

Beneficiaries were given day-old chicks, chicken feeds, fingerlings, fish feeds, 10 kg of maize seeds, sprayers, and herbicides among others.
