The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has conducted a one-day training for wheat farmers in the North East sub-region, on good agricultural practice on wheat storage.
Declaring the training open in Gombe, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammed Mahmood Abubakar, said the training was timely considering the challenges posed by the current Russia/Ukraine war.
According to reports, there are fears of imminent shortage of wheat if the current war in Ukraine persisted, Russia being considered among the largest exporter of wheat in the world.
Represented by the Zonal Director of the ministry, Malam Umaru Yusuf, the minister said wheat is one of the most consumed agricultural food products in the country.
He added that the wheat value chain is quite large as it can be processed into different range of foods including; pasta, bread, noodles among others.
Dr Abubakar urged the farmers to grow wheat in large quantity, noting that the training would also equip them with modern technology on wheat farming, storage as well as marketing.
