Speaking during the opening ceremony of the workshop, Zonal pest control officer, Mr. Johnson Wazairi, said the workshop was designed to enhance crop production and protects crop yields from the field to the stores.
He urged participants to educate other farmers on what they learn by disseminating the information to contact farmers in their areas.
In his address, Gombe state commissioner for agriculture, Alhaji Dahiru Buba Biri represented by Director Agriculture Benjamin Wabida, urged the participants to take the workshop seriously and also impart the knowledge they acquired at the workshop to contact farmers in their areas.
In a paper titled “Practical Guide to Safe Use and Handling of Pesticides” presented by Folorunso A. Ajayi, a Professor of Agric Entomology/crop production from the Nasarawa state University Keffi, said pesticides must be diluted with water, oil, air or chemically inactive (inert) solids so that it can be handled by application equipment and sprayed evenly over the area to be treated.
He warned that chemicals should always be handled with care and transported with caution, he urged participants to always triple-rinse emptied product containers and dispose by following local best practices.
