Dr Obot who spoke In Uyo, Akwa Ibom state on Monday to mark the 2013 national cancer month activities said that the need has became necessary to help  early detection of the dreaded disease, thereby reducing to the minimum the mortality rate amongst victims.
“The Medical Women Association of Nigeria is calling for improved early detection of these cancers and passionately appealing to the government and all well meaning Nigerians to help establish cancer
She commended the Ekiti State government for taking the initiative, calling on other state governments to follow suits.
She said the disease affects men and women which always result in death could be reduced by more than 30 percent if people modified or avoid risk factors like tobacco use, overweight or obese, unhealthy diet with low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activities, amongst others.
“Women are reminded that breast cancer is preventable though weight management, having a genetic factor screening and breast cancer is curable through early detection, monthly breast self-examination, annual doctor’s examination, breast scan and mammography. A woman’s sexual pattern or habit predisposed her to cervical cancer. Every mother is advised to give their daughters adequate sexual counseling to avoid early invitation to sex to reduce this risk and to have regular cervical screening”, she added.
She  advocated for cervical cancer prevention guidelines for the country as such would bring about human papilloma virus [HPV] testing as part of screening in women aged fourty [30] and above and HPV vaccination for all girls aged 11 and above.
