The Federal Government has been called upon to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as part of efforts to address challenges in the health sector.
The call was made by the President of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Prof. Mohammad Aminu, in a statement issued in Jos, Plateau State.
Prof. Aminu commended the government for resolving matters relating to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) but urged that the same level of attention be given to other aspects of the MoU with the NMA.
According to him, these outstanding issues include the conclusion of due process for the increase in retirement age for medical consultants from 60 to 70 years, and for other healthcare workers from 60 to 65 years, as approved by President Bola Tinubu. He noted that this adjustment is important for mentorship, training, service delivery, and research.
Other pending matters, he added, include the release of the January 2024 agreed clinical duty allowance and other allowances for honorary consultants, the full implementation of the new hazard allowance for doctors in colleges of medicine, the immediate payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), provision of life insurance coverage for healthcare workers, and measures to address brain drain while improving hospital infrastructure.
Prof. Aminu said a comprehensive approach to these issues would help strengthen the healthcare system. He also reaffirmed MDCAN’s commitment to constructive dialogue with the Federal Government for the benefit of the sector and Nigerians at large.
