The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA) has called on the federal government to step up teachers welfare rather than offering a two-year employment to 500,000 graduate teachers.
The national moderator, Malam Kabiru Aliyu, said at a media conference that the government must be commended in its effort of bridging the gap in teacher/pupil ratio through the employment of 500,000 teachers, but the welfare of the existing teachers should have been the focus.
Aliyu also said that the school feeding programme would be a success if the government looked into the welfare of teachers to enable them manage the expected population increase in schools.
He said there was the possibility of the new teachers abandoning their work midway due to the unavailability of incentives or on getting better job offers.
