Bakare who made the statement in Abuja during an interview with newsmen said that investing in forest conservation would boost the economy and reduce over-reliance on oil and gas sectors.
She said that forest conservation activities would improve the livelihoods of rural low income population and encourage their resilience to tackle climate change challenges.
The NFCC boss said that the government could also earn carbon credit through forest conservation.
She said that carbon credit had a key component of national and international emissions trading schemes, which had been implemented in mitigating global warming.
‘’The nation does not know yet that any carbon credit is something that will help our development.
‘’It is something that can help our unemployment. With carbon credit project, we could create employment as high as a million in the next four years.
‘’If government wants to create 10 million jobs in the next five years, all they need to do is to add carbon credit project into their main projects, not just oil and gas.
‘’Till now government is not yet investing in this area, I will appeal to the Federal Government to invest more in this project,’’ she said.
Bakare said the Taraba Government had signed an agreement with her company to manage its forest resources for sustainable development.
‘’We have an agreement with the Federal Government to Reduce Emission Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) project, which means managing the forest.
“We will also look at how we can use the forest to bring sustainable development to the state, earn carbon credit through the UN Kyoto protocol, create employment for their youth and improve quality of lives and infrastructure,’’ she said. (NAN)
